Foundry Networks and InMon Deliver Next-Generation Network Management Solutions for High-Performance Networks

Innovative Technology, sFlow™, Addresses Traffic Management, Capacity Planning, SLA Management, and Traffic Accounting for High Performance Networks

San Jose, Calif. – March 7, 2001 - Foundry Networks®, Inc. (NASDAQ: FDRY), a performance and total solutions leader for end-to-end switching and routing, and InMon Corp, a provider of traffic management solutions for high-speed networks, today announced a strategic partnership to deliver next-generation traffic management solutions for the enterprise, service provider, and metro provider markets.

The joint solution from Foundry and InMon allows network managers to maximize the network performance , collect accurate usage based accounting for billing purposes, utilize new network resources effectively through performance analysis, and detect and contain Denial of Service attacks for enhanced security. By providing “always-on” monitoring and management of tens of thousands of ports from 10 Mbps to 10Gbps, network performance can be optimized for today's mission-critical, value-added applications and services.

“We began using the InMon technology with Foundry products to aid us with traffic usage accounting and usage-based billing. We have also used the technology to protect our network from any denial of service attack that may occur,” said Brad Jones, senior network architect at Center 7. “Because of the superior performance, scalability, and security of the Foundry/InMon solution, we are further expanding Foundry/InMon solution deployment to improve the performance and reliability of our network.”

Central to the Foundry/InMon partnership is the innovative sFlow(TM) technology created by InMon, which provides information key to managing traffic and network performance in today's high-speed environments. This information includes inter-AS traffic, inter-VLAN traffic, enterprise-wide traffic matrices for Layer 2 through 7 switching, and usage-based accounting. When the sFlow technology and the InMon Traffic Server are combined with Foundry's industry’s leading BigIron® Layer 3 switches, the NetIron® Internet routers, ServerIron(TM) Web switches, and FastIron® wiring closet switches, customers get a comprehensive solution for LAN, MAN, and WAN environments.

“The Foundry/InMon partnership provides a breakthrough solution for service providers, metro providers, and enterprise network managers who need to optimize network performance and enhance the scalability, reliability, manageability and service quality of their high-performance networks,” said Ken Cheng, vice president of marketing for Foundry Networks. “Our partnership with InMon is part of Foundry’s commitment to provide next-generation network management solutions to our customers, today.”

sFlow technology is an emerging multi-vendor standard specifically designed to provide network-wide, continuous monitoring of high-speed switched environments. It is lightweight enough to embed in every switch port and scalable enough to provide continuous real-time traffic monitoring of the whole network, able to monitor thousands of ports at 10Gbps speeds.

sFlow technology builds detailed traffic information by combining accurate packet counters with statistical sampling of forwarded packets and the associated routing and bridging state. The technology is currently available in the form of a probe that makes use of standard port mirroring and SNMP capability.

“We are pleased to be working with Foundry Networks,” said Peter Phaal, President of InMon Corp. “By delivering solutions to solve critical performance and traffic management bottlenecks, Foundry and InMon will offer enterprise, metro providers, and service provider customers a cost-effective way to allow their networks to deliver the performance and differentiated services demanded by today’s users.”

The InMon Traffic Server is a comprehensive traffic analysis product, which makes use of the sFlow technology to provide “always-on” monitoring of tens of thousands of switch ports, producing real-time and historical reports of application-layer traffic flows across the whole network. sFlow also provides the layer 2 information critical to managing VLAN, MAN, and data center networks. The Traffic Server is used to identify sources of congestion, detect and control denial of service attacks, set effective QoS policies to meet SLAs, manage the deployment of new value-added services, optimize peering relationships using BGP AS path data, and support usage-based accounting and billing.
